Election of the Speaker of the House — a by-name vote: each member answers the roll with the name of their candidate rather than Yea or Nay. Electing a Speaker requires a majority of the votes cast for a candidate by name; answering “Present” or not voting does not count toward that threshold. A ballot where no candidate reaches a majority elects no Speaker, and the House votes again.
